Kathy Griffin Undergoes Second Vocal Cord Surgery: ‘Worth It for a Chance to Regain My Voice’!

Comedian Kathy Griffin has given an update after her vocal cord surgery.

On June 12, she posted a photo on Instagram showing a bandage on her throat where the surgery took place.

“The surgery went well. 🙏 You can see some scarring and swelling. It will be worth it if I get some of my voice back. 🙏🙏🙏,” Griffin wrote.

The day before her surgery, Kathy Griffin posted a video on Instagram explaining what she was having done. She said, “I’m getting an implant in my left vocal cord, which was paralyzed during my lung cancer surgery when they removed half my left lung.”

She added, “I also have a tear above my vocal cords, which is why my voice sometimes goes higher when I’m doing stand-up.”

Griffin admitted, “I’m usually not nervous before surgery, and I’ve had many, but I’m a bit nervous about this one because it’s my voice and I’ve already had issues with it before.”

For her recovery, Griffin can’t talk for the next couple of weeks. She told her followers, “Wish me luck. Not being able to talk for two weeks is going to drive me crazy, so I’ll be watching a lot of TikTok instead of making any.”

She finished by saying she’s “always trying to make her voice better,” and this was the last thing she could say for two weeks.

Kathy Griffin’s My Life on the PTSD-List tour is set to continue on August 23 at Connecticut’s District Music Hall.

Her latest surgery follows an operation on her left vocal cord in May 2023. In June, she told PEOPLE that the surgery was tough, as the vocal cord was damaged almost two years ago during her lung cancer treatment.

In August 2021, Kathy Griffin shared on Instagram that she had been diagnosed with lung cancer and had surgery to remove part of her lung. By November, she announced she was cancer-free. However, she has talked about the difficulties of having a paralyzed left vocal cord.

She told PEOPLE, “What’s really strange and confusing is that when I had cancer, I didn’t have any symptoms. Then I had the surgery to remove half my left lung. Now, it feels and sounds like I have cancer.”

She added, “The frustrating part is that I sound like I’m in pain, but I’m not.”
